December 14, 2018 Question: I understand that the first 2018-2019 quarterly lottery apportionments are expected from the state by the end of this month. Do new charter schools receive lottery funds during their first year of operation?

Answer: No. Newly opening charter schools do not receive lottery funds during their first year of operation. Lottery funds are based upon prior year Average Daily Attendance (ADA). The Lottery Commission tallies its receipts at the close of the fiscal year. After June 30th, the exact funding rate is determined based on the tally total and the school's ADA for that year. The following link to the CDE's website has comprehensive information on quarterly lottery apportionments, revenue projections, and reports on lottery expenditures to the Legislature as required by the Budget Act.
