June 19, 2017 Question: Does AB 2246 apply to charter schools?

Answer: Yes. In accordance with AB 2246, before the start of the 2017-18 school year, LEAs, including charter public schools, serving grades 7-12, inclusive, must adopt a suicide prevention policy. The policy must be developed in consultation with key stakeholders including mental health professionals and suicide prevention experts. The policy should address procedures relating to suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention and, in particular, focus on the needs of high risk youth, including bereaved students, students with disabilities, mental illness, or substance use disorders, and LGBT youth. The policy should also include a process as to how trainings and training materials for teachers, including self-review materials, will be provided.
