Update: Admissions and Enrollment Practices of Charter Schools

February 18, 2015 As a result of increased media scrutiny on the admissions and enrollment practices of charter public schools, CCSA wants to ensure that our member charter schools have proper guidance on this topic. Charter schools may design enrollment policies tailored to assist them in carrying out their educational mission.

However, by law, charter schools must be open to all students who wish to attend and may not have academic criteria for initial or continued enrollment. For example, students may not be excluded from a charter school for the sole reason of failing to meet or maintain a prescribed grade point average or academic proficiency level.

For further guidance on this topic, the Association has issued a Knowledge Brief that outlines the basic legal requirements and addresses common questions related to the admissions and enrollment process.
