Capitol Update 12/18/14

December 18, 2014

This week, Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León announced new committee chairs for the next legislative year. Being selected to chair a committee can be a powerful tool in both the policy and political realm. In the Capitol, you have a large amount of control over what policy specific bills are approved in your committee. Outside of the Capitol, the chairmanship gives you a platform and visibility upon which to do political fundraising. One of the most powerful chairmanships, the Appropriations Committee is the chairmanship formerly held by pro Tem de León. This session, Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens), the former chair of the Latino Caucus and a close ally of pro Tem de León, is chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee.
