Question: Are charter schools subject to the same federal civil rights laws that apply to traditional public schools?

Answer: Yes. Regardless of whether or not they receive Federal funding, charter schools must comply with all federal civil rights laws including "discrimination based on race, color, national origin or ethnicity, gender or sex, disability or age." In addition, charter schools that do receive Federal funding are subject to the additional requirements of each grant program.
