Question: Is there a state law which guarantees teachers 10 sick days a year? How many paid sick days are typically offered at a charter school?

Answer: There is no legal requirement in California that an employer provide its employees with either paid or unpaid vacation time. 10 days is the average number of sick days, but this is at the discretion of the charter school and an issue covered through the school's own employment contracts and personnel policies. Charter schools typically handle the sick leave situation by offering either:

1) Specified sick leave days and specified personal days

OR

2) A specified number of days of PTO, which may be taken for any reason, including illness.
