January 15, 2014 On January 7, the LAUSD Board voted to hold a special election to fill the vacancy created by the passing of former Board member Marguerite LaMotte. The primary special election would be consolidated with the June 3, 2014 statewide election, and a runoff special election, if necessary, would take place on August 12, 2014.

On January 10, the Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved the school board's request to consolidate the special election with the June 3 statewide election and to hold the runoff, if necessary, in August.

And on January 14, the Board, by a vote of 4-2, decided to appoint an interim, non-voting Board Member to fill the vacancy until the special election took place and a new Board member was seated.
