September 3, 2013 Congratulations to Don Phillips and the founders of Science Technology Engineering Math Arts and Music (STREAM)! The founding team of educators and community leaders has deep ties in the community and are CCSA Developer Members. The school will serve grades K-8.

The charter petition was approved after a long public hearing, despite opposition from the teachers association and a negative staff recommendation. CCSA Member Council Representative, Casey Taylor also attending the hearing, and Managing Regional Director, Laura Kerr, testified on behalf of the group. Parents from Palermo, Thermalito, Chico, and Oroville spoke out in support of the proposed school, saying that they were excited about the rigorous and well-rounded education program. Community leaders stated that they wanted a flagship school that would draw people to their town. Founding teachers spoke eloquently about wanting to be part of something big that would make a difference for kids.

In the end, the board voted 4-1 in favor of the proposal, granting a full 5 year term without contingencies. STREAM plans to request a facility from the district via Prop. 39, and CCSA will continue to support them as they prepare to open in the Fall of 2014.
