Legal Requirements for Student Outreach
June 18, 2013
4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Led by Lisa Corr

Charter school law is filled with apparent inconsistencies - on one hand, charter schools must admit all students who wish to attend, and on the other, it must describe its "admissions requirements" within its charter. Charter schools may not discriminate on the basis of race or ethnicity, but must describe in its charter how it will ensure that its pupil population reflects the racial and ethnic balance of the territorial jurisdiction of the school district. This workshop will delve into these and other legal "mysteries" regarding the student outreach and admissions process. Together, we will consider the following questions: What is a legally appropriate admissions requirement? Can a charter school legally control its pupil population? What is a "public random drawing" and how is it conducted? How do the Public Charter Schools Grant program requirements affect the public random drawing and admissions preferences?
