June 13, 2013 This year, many school leaders and elected officials have debated use of "willful defiance" as a reason for school suspensions and expulsions. A new play called "Willful" by Julie Marie Myatt is based on real-life stories of "willful defiance" from people in the Sacramento community. You can hear a reading from this play and take part in a community conversation about school discipline at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 26 at the State Capitol, Room 126 at an event hosted by Assemblyman Roger Dickinson called "Talk It Out: A Community Conversation to Fix School Discipline." Dickinson authored AB420 Disruption and Defiance: Reducing Grounds for Harsh Discipline to minimize the excessive use of "willful defiance" as a reason for suspension or expulsion. Parents, students and school leaders are invited to attend.
