CCSA Answers: Opting Out of the STRS Retirement Network

February 8, 2013

Question: Is there any way for our school to drop out of the STRS retirement network? We are facing renewal and would like to transfer all of our employees to a 401K system.

Answer: Once a school opts into STRS, there is no "opt out" method other than changing its legal identity. For a charter school, that would mean obtaining a new CDS code. A school retains its CDS code and SBE number upon renewal, unless the authorizer changes.
