January 18, 2013 Families in Schools is launching their annual Million Word Challenge literacy campaign in partnership with the following organizations: Scholastic, Target, the United Way of Greater Los Angeles, the City of Los Angeles, La Opinion, LAUSD, the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, Los Angeles County Office of Education, and the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading.

Local charter schools can register to be part of the campaign, which kicks off city-wide on Feb. 4, 2013. Registration and participation are both free. The campaign is 9-weeks and challenges students to read millions of words outside of the classroom, with each participating school selecting the student who logs the most out of classroom reading time as the winner.
