San Diego State University K-12 Partnership Community Forums

October 18, 2012 Under the leadership of President Elliot Hirshman, San Diego State University has begun a strategic planning process to look closely at the university's current work and propose recommendations for future initiatives. Strategic planning is critical as the university looks toward a future with diminishing resources, but with an unwavering commitment to its educational mission and community partnerships.

You are invited to an open forum to meet with the K-12 Partnerships Working Group, one of four working groups within the Community Engagement Task Force. The purpose of this Working Group is to look closely at the current K-12 partnerships, and suggest future directions that may build on the current work and/or recommend new initiatives. Your voice is important! We value your input to help shape San Diego State University's K-12 Partnerships. The following questions will help us look toward the future:

  • Since its founding in 1897, the university has been committed to educating teachers and supporting K-12 education. Part of this commitment has included the Compact for Success with Sweetwater Union School District and the College Avenue compact in City Heights. Should we further develop these partnerships? What should the balance be between supporting local school districts and developing effective educational practices with partner districts?
  • The university has a long history of engagement with the community to address key, critical issues related to public schools. What specific areas of expertise are important for us to bring to our K-12 partnerships?
  • There is strong workforce demand for graduates in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The university has a number of initiatives to support STEM programs in K-12. Should we expand or add to these initiatives?

We hope you can attend one of the two forums that are scheduled. We look forward to hearing from you about K-12 partnerships.
