Visiting Schools is Worth the Time Investment

June 22, 2012 The school year is now over but when the time comes to start thinking about the next year, I'd recommend creating a plan to visit other charter schools. Visiting schools is a priority for me and you don't fully realize the benefits you gain from the experience until after the visit.

There are so many things that we can learn from one another, but for me it is about building a closer relationship with each other. There is nothing more valuable than creating a relationship where you can pick up the phone and comfortably call someone to speak recreationally or to get assistance on a time sensitive issue. You may have heard me say this before but one of the beautiful things about charter schools is that they are often very autonomous, agile so they can create change quickly and independent ... and a challenge also happens be that they are autonomous and they are very independent. Getting charter leaders to connect on a regular basis has its obstacles. I've seen some great examples of charter leaders who connect on a regular basis, but often we are all so busy with the day to day activities of the school site that putting the time aside to visit schools and further develop those relationships is hard to do but worth the time investment.
