Are charter schools required to adopt anti-bullying policies under AB 9 and AB 1156?

Answer: AB 9 and AB 1156 do not apply to charter schools since the bills themselves do not specifically include charter schools. While these laws do not apply, there are general prohibitions against discrimination that do apply to charter schools. Many forms of bullying rise to the level of discrimination as defined under federal and state laws. It is a best practice for charter schools to think about how bullying, depending on its severity, might be addressed under the school's general discipline processes and school culture practices.
