New SELPA for Region 1 - Deadline Approaches

March 7, 2012 Dissatisfied with your special education arrangements? Seeking increased autonomy, flexibility and access to funding? If so, please continue reading for some important updates and timelines.

The new Sonoma County Charter SELPA, approved unanimously by the State Board of Education last November, will begin serving Northern California charter schools on July 1, 2012. This new charter-only SELPA will enable charter schools to deliver improved quality of services to students with disabilities by providing a much needed option for charter schools seeking status as local education agencies (LEAs) for special education purposes.

While the application deadline for the 2012-2013 school year has now passed, schools that are interested in gaining increased autonomy and flexibility for special education and that are in need of alternative SELPA arrangements should consider applying to the Sonoma County Charter SELPA for the 2013-2014 school year. If your school is interested in pursuing LEA status for the 2013-2014 school year, you must submit a letter notifying your existing SELPA of your intent to exit the SELPA by June 30, 2012.
