New Charters in San Diego Unified

March 6, 2012 Last Tuesday night was a busy night for charters at the SDUSD board meeting. Kavod Charter had a public hearing on their proposed bilingual program, where students will learn Hebrew. They are a K-5 program that hopes to open in fall of 2012 in the Kearny Mesa area. The other public hearing was for SD Conservatory of Music which is a K-6 program that proposes integrating music throughout the curriculum. They hope to locate in Mission Valley and open in fall of 2012.

Two new charters were also approved; Epiphany Prep. was approved to open their K-8 program in fall of 2013 and Village Academy of Cognitive Development, a K-5 program opening in fall of 2012 in the downtown area. Both of these charter developers were the first to go through the new capacity interview process. Both were approved conditionally: Epiphany for 4 years, the first to plan, and Village for 3 years. Village Academy must have a facility with a appropriate compliance by August 15 and 90 students enrolled by September 28. If they don't have these two things, they are expected to surrender their charter at the end of their first year. The approval process is certainly evolving and SDUSD is holding a higher standard. We are still seeing growth though and if these two charters are approved at the next charter board meeting, SDUSD's total will be 49 charter schools.
