Charter Schools from Sacramento, Paradise Participate in the Rally for Funding Equity
March 2, 2012 While some participants simply walked over from the Sacramento Convention Center, four charter school communities from our region filled buses to bring parents, students, and teachers to the capitol to participate. Fortune School, Westlake Charter School, and Golden Valley Charter School each had a bus of parents and supporters, while a third bus was shared by families from three charter schools in Paradise (Butte County) - including Achieve Charter, Children's Community Charter School, and Paradise Charter Middle School.
The Paradise bus traveled the furthest to Sacramento despite a storm that left the foothill town blanketed in snow. The parents of Fortune School showed their unity by wearing matching scarves. They beamed with pride when their founder, Margaret Fortune, stood at the podium and spoke out against unequal funding for charter schools. Golden Valley Charter School students were also featured in the rally program. After arriving by bus, they inspired the crowd by singing their rendition of "Down by the Riverside." Finally, Westlake parents brought hand-made and heart-felt signs that certainly caught the eye of keynote speaker Governor Jerry Brown.
A warm thank you to all of the charter school supporters that got on the bus, and rode to the rally that day. Each of the schools showed their commitment to collectively fighting for the charter schools movement. Together we are stronger!
