LAUSD Board Approves Policy on Founding Parents at Charters

February 10, 2012 On Tuesday, February 7, the LAUSD Board approved a new Founding Parent policy for LAUSD authorized charter schools. The policy was developed in collaboration with the Association.

We are happy to report that the new policy is one that will enable new school developers who rely heavily on the work of parents to do outreach, petition development, facilities procurement, culture setting, etc to continue to be able to do so in a fair and equitable manner, consistent with the intent of charter law.

This is a win for our community because it could have easily been an opportunity for the district to develop overly stringent regulations precluding schools from benefiting from the critical role founding parents play in the start up of so many local schools. Instead, we were able to work collaboratively with Board Member Kayser's office on the issue and we were able to get the policy approved, in spite of last minute opposition.

Thank you to Aspire Public Schools, Citizens of the World Charter Schools, City Charter School, Green Dot Charter Schools, Larchmont Charter Schools and Synergy Charter Academies who helped contribute feedback to the development of the policy and who engaged in Board member outreach in support of the policy.
