Continued Charter Growth in San Diego County

February 24, 2012 One might worry that with the economic climate charter growth might slow, but that doesn't seem to be the case in SD County. We have had quite a few petitioners bringing charters forward to San Diego Unified and other districts as well. The most recent is the Steven Hawking Math and Science Charter School that was approved last Tuesday at the Sweetwater Board Meeting. It was a nice change of pace to see a district so supportive of the charter concept and willing to accept them as part of their portfolio of choices for students. At full capacity the charter will provide services Pre-K through grade 16, but will begin its first year with Pre-K to 3. The charter school's focus will be to address the issue of South County students being underrepresented in colleges/universities in the STEM career paths. The Stephen Hawking Math and Science Charter School wants to change that reality for this community.
