October 28, 2011 The National Association of Charter School Authorizers (NACSA) awarded the California Charter Schools Association (CCSA) with its 2011 Award for Excellence in Advancing Knowledge in recognition of the Portrait of the Movement report. The report, released in February 2011, gives a comprehensive and transparent assessment of charter school performance in California, and introduces a performance framework to strengthen academic accountability for underperforming charters.

NACSA President and CEO Greg Richmond said in a statement, "It isn't easy, as a charter school association, to come out and say, 'These charter schools are failing,'" said NACSA President and CEO Greg Richmond. "The California Charter School Association took that a critical step towards demanding that every charter be a great charter school in the state with Portrait of the Movement."
