Butte County Office of Education Convenes Charter Leaders

October 6, 2011 On October 6, charter leaders from Chico, Paradise, Nord, Forest Ranch and other communities in Butte County in participated in a luncheon hosted by the Butte County Office of Education (BCOE). The purpose of the meeting was to increase collaboration between BCOE and the charter operators.

The meeting was kicked off by County Superintendent of Schools Don McNelis, who welcomed the school leaders and set a tone of collegiality. The agenda included an update from the Association by Member Council Representative Casey Taylor; information on cash flow issues; and an overview of county resources available to charter schools, including professional development. There was also a robust discussion about transitional Kindergarten and common core planning.

The next meeting will feature Roy Applegate, Director of Butte County SELPA. The Association has committed to surveying the landscape of special education in Butte County to inform the discussion. Butte County charter leaders are strongly encourage to complete the survey in order to inform our conversation.

The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for the end of January 2012.
