LA Special Education Professional Development Opportunity

The Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) is hosting a great professional development opportunity for special education professionals. On Thursday, March 9 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., the LACOE is hosting a Special Education Symposium called "Harnessing the Power of WE" designed to create a collaborative community of special education professionals in Los Angeles County at the LACOE Conference Center in Downey.

The event will feature inspirational keynote speaker, Spencer West, along with multiple breakout sessions and networking opportunities. Breakout sessions will feature experts from around the county sharing their best practices and innovations. Topics include:

  • Research-based best practices for all learners
  • Models for collaboration
  • Peer-mediated support for autism
  • Innovations in Positive Behavioral Interventions & Support
  • Legal and financial issues

At the symposium, CCSA's special education team, in collaboration with Multicultural Learning Center charter school, will present a breakout session titled "Best Practices for All Learners." The presentation will detail findings from a year-long statewide qualitative study of ten successful California charter schools to see what really works in special education. The session will combine research findings with practical tools from a school leader who challenged the status quo and expanded the boundaries of a special education program design to meet the needs of all learners. Attendees will learn about positive behavior supports, restorative justice and inclusion along with new technologies and approaches for effective intervention.
