African American Student Performance in Charter Schools
10:45 a.m. - Noon
"Chartering and Choice as an Achievement Gap-Closing Reform'' is a research report detailing the performance and enrollment trends of African American students in charter public and traditional public schools. The results show African American students are experiencing better outcomes in the state's charter schools. Dr. Aisha Lowe, the author of the report, will guide the audience through the report's key findings and an interactive discussion about best practices for serving African American students.
Common Challenges To Equitably Serving Underserved Students With Excellence
2 - 3:45 p.m.
How can the charter school movement lead the way in serving underserved students and have an impact on how traditional school systems address the achievement gap that persists nationwide? A panel of school directors, administrators and teachers will lead a discussion about where we are in this fight, where we need to be and how we are going to get there together.
Culturally Responsive Instruction That Works: Successful Practices to Use
3:45 - 5 p.m.
This session will define concretely what is culturally and linguistically responsive teaching and learning and then example three poignant responsive teaching activities, so participants will know with resolve what it means to validate, affirm, build and bridge for all students, in particular the underserved.
