In the fall of 2011-12, California saw 100 new charter schools opening their doors at the beginning of the school year.
The number pushed the total of charter schools in California to 982, the largest number of charters in any state in the country.
California charter student enrollment grew more than 13% in 2011-12 such that charters now serve more than 412,000 students or 7% of all public school students in the state. Every major county in the state experienced significant growth, with Los Angeles County topping the list with 30 new charters for a total of 261, the highest number of charter schools in any county in the U.S.
