CCSA ramped up our advocacy efforts this year in response to a vast increase in the number of anti-charter school bills introduced in the Legislature. Because of member participation and CCSA’s advocacy efforts, no bills are headed to the Governor for his signature or veto that CCSA opposes.

The new Celerity Sirius charter school located on a closed Compton Unified campus represents an unprecedented collaboration between the charter, the community and local educational agencies.
The Association has been supporting members in Sacramento City Unified School District on facility issues for the past three years, and a lot has changed since 2008.
We recently took advantage of the summer break to squeeze in a few minutes with Meredith Dadigan, the 2011 Hart Vision Teacher of the Year. Dadigan is an elementary school teacher at Aspire Titan Academy in Los Angeles, one of 30 Aspire schools throughout California.
Because of intricacies of the charter program, charter schools have historically been disadvantaged in the school construction process. The current State Allocations Board recognized this disadvantage and recently began working to put charters on an equal playing field with the rest of the school facilities projects.
CCSA has achieved wins at the legislative level that result in more funds for charters, and has been successful in defeating legislation that would cost charters dearly.
Capitol Collegiate is located in a rough area of south Sacramento. Their goal is to deliver a rigorous college preparatory program to inner city students in grades K-8. The school will serve over 500 students when full, with the majority coming from socio-economically disadvantaged households.

CCSA knows that finding and securing facilities can be challenging work for charter schools. The Association will once again offer a variety of resources for our members, including templates, pro-bono legal reviews for member applications in selected regions, and technical support from CCSA’s Help Desk. This year, however, we will also be trying something new.

Bayshore Preparatory Charter School Executive Director Nancy Spencer announced this week that the school has exceeded all expectations and increased its Academic Performance Index (API) score by a record 65 points.
For the seventh consecutive year PS7 showed gains on the CST, both overall and relative to their peers. PS7 students were the highest performing students in the Sacramento City Unified School District on ten of seventeen CSTs and they were the second, third or fourth highest performing on three additional exams.
