Special Agent Tells of Law Enforcement Career Opportunities with Students from SIATech Los Angeles
On Wednesday, October 13, 2010, four students from SIATech Los Angeles had the opportunity to have lunch with Special Agent Robert Becker of the Department of State, Diplomatic Security Service (DSS). Special Agent Becker was asked to meet for lunch with students who expressed interest in law enforcement.
Students often do not realize there are many different jobs in law enforcement other than their local police department. Special Agent Becker, having experience in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and DSS, was able to provide information about jobs they could pursue on the federal level.
For an hour and a half, students were entertained by his stories and experiences, as well as the truths of the positive and negatives of different federal agencies. Special Agent Becker told students, "I didn't know my job existed until three years ago. If not for a neighbor, I wouldn't have known this was a job I could pursue."
Special Agent Becker took on the security detail of the Dalai Lama in Los Angeles and has been to Rwanda, Congo, and Pakistan with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Prior to meeting with the students, he was posted in New York City for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where he had the opportunity to listen to Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama speak.
SIATech Los Angeles would like to thank Special Agent Becker for his continued support of our students. He continues to be an extremely valuable resource to students past and present.
