On January 29, 2014, the California Charter Schools Association (CCSA) released a new report on Los Angeles public high schools which shows that charter schools surpass traditional district schools in graduating college-ready students of all backgrounds.

New Report: Los Angeles Charter Schools are Answering the College-Ready Challenge

The California Charter Schools Association (CCSA) has released a new report on Los Angeles public high schools which shows that charter schools surpass traditional district schools in graduating college-ready students of all backgrounds.

Key findings:

  • Los Angeles charter schools graduate 4 times as many students who are college-ready (A-G) than traditional district schools.
  • Charter schools also graduate high school students at higher rates - 79% versus 66% for traditional schools.
  • Most importantly, charter schools are closing the achievement gap for high school students who have historically been left behind by the system. 73% of African-American students at charter schools graduate college-ready vs. 14% at traditional district schools and 76% of Latinos charter schools vs. 17% at district schools.
  • Charter schools enroll only 19% of LA high school students, yet they deliver 37% of LA's college-ready graduates.
